Skill 1 Unit 2: City life

Skill 1 Unit 2: City life

In this unit, we will focus on two important skills: reading and speaking. The exercises in the textbook will provide you with guidelines and tips on how to solve the exercises effectively.

Reading

1. Work in pairs and discuss the most important features in a city. Put the following features in order from 1 to 8, with 1 being the most important: transport, education, climate, culture, safety, cost of living, entertainment, convenience.

2. Read the passage quickly and fill in the blanks with the correct information. The survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in 2014 revealed that Melbourne in Australia is the best city to live in, while Dhaka in Bangladesh, Tripoli in Libya, and Douala in Cameroon are among the worst cities.

3. Some organizations and individuals suggest adding factors like green space, urban sprawl, natural features, cultural attractions, convenience, and pollution to the list of criteria for evaluating cities.

4. Work in groups to conduct a survey and rank your own town or a town you know based on factors such as safety, transport, education, climate, culture, facilities, entertainment, natural features, urban sprawl, and pollution control. Each factor is given a score from 10 (best) to 1 (worst) by each group member. Calculate the final result for your group and compare it with other groups.

Overall, this unit will help you analyze and assess the important features of a city, and develop your reading and speaking skills as you discuss and present your findings to the class.
