1. Chọn một cụm từ/từ ngữ trong câu gốc làm mục tiêu đặc biệt của câu cleft.
2. Chia câu cleft thành hai phần:
- Cụm từ/từ ngữ đặc biệt + be + cụm từ/từ ngữ còn lại của câu gốc (chuỗi này sẽ đặt ở dạng bị động).
3. Đặt giới từ "that" trước cụm từ/từ ngữ đặc biệt. (nếu cần thiết)
4. Thêm dấu phẩy giữa hai phần của câu cleft.
