1. Chuyển câu hỏi từ câu trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp: thay đổi thì động từ, thay đổi các đại từ, thêm "if or whether".
2. Đưa câu trở về dạng câu hỏi hoặc khẳng định tùy theo yêu cầu của câu hỏi.
3. Sắp xếp câu để nó trở thành câu hoàn chỉnh.

Ví dụ câu trả lời cho câu hỏi thứ 2:

=> I asked Mrs. Kent how long her son had learned English.

Hoặc:
- I said to Mrs. Kent: "How long has your son learned English?"
=> I asked Mrs. Kent if her son had learned English.

Ví dụ câu trả lời cho câu hỏi thứ 3:
- Susan said: "When will you go back?"
=> Susan asked when she would go back.

Ann asked what they were going to study.

Peter asked if they were working as well as studying.

John wanted to know if they had been to Ha Long yet.

The mother asked Helen what she would do by the day after tomorrow.
